Todorov's Narrative Theory

Today we learned about Todorov's Narrative Theory. His theory is about the different stages of a storyline. Here they are:

1. Equilibrium

2. Disruption of the equilibrium

3. Recognition of the disruption

4. Attempt to repair disruption

5. Equilibrium is restored.

We wrote our own psychological thriller storylines using this template and shared them with our groups. We will choose the best one out of our group and film the opening sequence for our final project.

Relating Todorov to our story

Here is Todorov's theory related to our storyline. Our opening storyboard is just the first stage.
Equilibrium: A man is released from a mental asylum after serving time for murder. And takes a very uncomfortable walk back to his house.

Disruption of the equilibrium: The man notices that nobody remembers who he is or what he has done.

Recognition of the disruption: The man goes to the library and looks up the murder that he committed, but the newspaper article he reads identifies the killing as a suicide.

Attempt to repaor disruption: The man goes on a mission to try and find out what has been happening and why nothing is as he remembers it

Equilibrium is restored: At the end of the film, we learn that the man was never released from the mental asylum, he has just been moved to a move secure unit because his state of mental health has deteriorated and no one is able to help him anymore.
